It started off wonderfully! Savannah was an angel on the plane on the way to Hawaii. I made "apology bags" for people sitting around us to let them know it was her first time flying and we were not sure what to expect. But what a waste of time that was. Although everyone enjoyed the candy and goodies, she was a doll. She slept a lot, drank a bottle during take off and landing to help with pressure in her ears, watched some tv and played with her toys. She gave out lots of free smiles to all the other passengers and flight attendants and enjoyed all the attention she got in return.
At the airport.
Eating during takeoff.
When we landed, our friends Brennan & Lisa and their 2-yr old son, Liam, were waiting for us with leis and yummy Hawaiian snacks. What a treat :) We hadn't seen them since last summer when they came to Houston for my baby shower. The live in Kailua on the east side of Oahu and are stationed with the Army for about 2 years. Our first night there we sat in their backyard and drank wine while the kids played and then we walked to the beach in their neighborhood and enjoyed the sunset. It was a lovely evening!
The next day we drove to the north shore of the island and walked around the shops and had lunch. We also had our first maitais of the trip.
Everything seemed to be going well until Savannah threw up in her carseat on the way back to their house….and when I say throw up I mean projectile vomit everything in her tummy all over herself, her carseat and anything near her in the backseat. It scared us half to death. When we got back to B&L's house we took her temp and it was 101.5. We gave her tylenol hoping that would help. After all, she's also teething which tends to be accompanied by a fever so we weren't necessarily worried…yet…
But the next morning her fever was still about 101. So, we decided we needed to get her checked out by a doctor. Trying to find infant urgent care in Honolulu made us feel like we were visiting a foreign country! Many places we called told us they didn't "treat visitors" or they didn't have a pediatrician on staff. That left us no choice but to head to the Women and Children's Hospital Emergency Room. And thank God we did. Savannah's temp had spiked to 103.9 and although her head, chest and back felt like they were on fire, her arms and legs were ice cold. We were scared to death.
In the ER….
Long story short, we spent about 3 hours in the ER on our 2nd day of vacation putting her through tests to discover that Savannah had PNEUMONIA. Poor baby!!!
So, we packed up our stuff from the Wallace house and rented a place to stay for the remainder of our trip. We didn't want to risk getting their family sick.
The Sheraton Waikiki -
We laid low for the next few days taking very close care of Savannah and letting her rest. We went to Waikiki Beach one morning when she was feeling pretty good.
And we went to Pearl Harbor and visited the Aviation Museum and the USS Missouri another day.
One morning we had breakfast at Leonard's. They primarily serve and are known for their malasadas which are basically absolutely delicious puffy donuts. There was a line out the door and people fighting over parking spaces when we got there. Apparently tourists even take cabs to Leonard's just to see what all the hype is about. Justin and I both decided it was well worth the wait.
Here are some pics we took on many scenic drives to Diamond Head, Koko Head Crater and the east side of the island.
Our Jeep took us off-roading so we could really get good views of the mountains and ocean.
We rented a pontoon boat one day and went out in Kaneohe Bay with Captain Brennan and his first mate, Liam.
The water was so shallow in the sandbar that a group of people setup a volleyball net!
Mamas and their babies!
Justin paddle boarding for the first time.
Savannah hated the life jacket but we got it on her and tricked her by only buckling the bottom buckle until we arrived at the sandbar.
And the next evening met the Wallace's at a pool at a resort for military families and took Savannah swimming for the first time. She loved it. She didn't let go of her rubber ducky the whole time and we figure she thought she was in a huge bathtub.
Although the trip turned out in no way as we had planned, we still had a lot of fun and got to see some great friends!
Here are a few shots from our last night on Waikiki Beach.
We'll miss you Brennan, Lisa and Liam!
